5 Ways Neurotic People Can Relax

I’m a neurotic mess and often find it difficult to sit back and just relax. I’ve tried yoga and meditation. I tried reading the Power of Now but my mind kept wandering to all of the things I had to accomplish. Here’s what I do that never fails to make me feel at peace:

1. Workout
Walking, running, cycling, weight training – working out is a great way to burn off steam. Bonus points if you workout outdoors to breathe some fresh air.

2. Indulge in Occasional Guilty Pleasures
I like reality TV. Ok – I LOVE reality TV. There’s something about curling up on the couch to watch The Hills that helps me escape from ‘normal’ life. As long as you don’t turn into a couch potato, there’s nothing wrong with partaking in a little television fun.

3. Listen to Music
Music can be soothing, energetic, soulful – it invokes a whole slew of emotions within us. Did you ever wonder why you could memorize all the words to a song and yet never memorize that important presentation or sales script? Download your favorite tunes and listen away!

4. Color
This one may come as a shock – especially since you are all adults. I was introduced to adult coloring recently by picking up The Color of Joy coloring book. It sat on my shelf for at least a week before I sat it next to my laptop. Now I find myself sketching, doodling and coloring in the pages without even thinking. It’s nice to have that creative release without having to ‘color within the lines.’

5. Get Lost in Your Imagination
I have one wild imagination and can bet that many of you reading this do as well. Your mind races with all of the things you want to accomplish and new ideas spark like wildfire. Why not indulge one of those imaginative fantasies by letting yourself dwell on it a bit longer? By freeing your mind, you may even come up with an amazing idea to turn it into a reality!
